The Institute of Foreign languages started functioning in the core of the city at polo view Srinagar in the year 1976, with the introduction of French and Russian languages. In eighties the German language was introduced. The institute was later shifted to the main campus of the university and is now situated in the ground floor of the arts faculty building.
The primary objective is to make foreign language teaching an integrated component of learning program, oriented to the needs of the society with special reference to increasing employment potential of an individual and also to facilitate international commerce.
The Institute is proposing to offer part time programs upto the advance diploma in French, German and Russian languages and also aims to introduce undergraduate courses and MA programs in these languages and their literature. Further, the institute proposes to introduce Certificate course in Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese languages.

The Institute envisions to emerge as one of the leading centers in the country engaged in teaching, research and service of major European languages and literatures.
The Institute seeks to develop linguistic competence and academic potential of students who desire to use their knowledge of and proficiency in foreign languages and literatures in their chosen profession and career through intensive foreign language programmes and continuous study support.
